OUR VISION

L&J Empowerment is a community-based 501c3 organization that empowers individuals to live their best life.

Lorenzo Lewis founded L&J Empowerment in 2016 out of a desire to end the generational trauma passed down in Lewis’ family and other African American families in the South due to the legacy of slavery. Our mission is to confront the systemic oppression that continues to exist by equipping 21st century leaders from marginalized communities of color with the tools they need to thrive.

As the governing body for various initiatives, our work revolves around three intersecting pillars: Mental health and suicide prevention, Healthcare Access and Economic Prosperity.

Mental Health & Suicide Prevention

In the African American community alone, suicide is the third leading cause of death. The Confess Project equips marginalized men of color with mental health strategies and coping skills to help them move past their pain.  A leading voice in the mental health advocacy field, we train barbers in the South and Midwest to become mental health advocates, partner with regional organizations, and train facilitators to promote mental wellness in underserved communities. Our vision is a world without stigma and shame.

Healthcare Access

We aim to increase access to health care services for low-income individuals. We are a person-centered, trauma informed, novice non-emergency medical transportation company providing punctual, courteous transportation with outstanding customer service to senior citizens and individuals with disabilities in need of non-emergency transportation.

Economic Prosperity

“Creating opportunities for the betterment of citizens based on social good, economic prosperity, and holistic wellness.” We’re on a mission to initiate programs through lacking health disparities with communities of color; equipping 21st Century Leaders with tools of Mental wellness, academic success and economic prosperity. We purposefully explore and utilize research towards health disparities in local and global communities, while operating through strategic measures which will ensure the overall quality of life for individuals being served.

WE USE TRAUMA-INFORMED PRACTICES

In the African American community alone, suicide is the third leading cause of death. The Confess Project exists to help change that. By equipping marginalized men of color with mental health strategies and coping skills, we are committed to changing the narrative of mental health for them and their families. Our vision is a world without stigma and shame.

As a leading voice in the mental health advocacy field, we’re continually innovating our programs to respond to community needs. Through our Beyond the Shop program, we train barbers to become mental health advocates. We also work with city governments, universities, and organizations to highlight how mental health intersects with police brutality, LGBT issues, gender inequality, and more. In 2020, we are partnering with Gillette as part of their The Best Men Can Be campaign to bring our “State of Mind” tour to 16 cities all over the country.

Studies show that people who have experienced trauma are less likely to retain employment. Our job coaching program, The Lewis Group, trains people living with intellectual and physical disabilities on everything from tips on dressing for an interview to skills on how to thrive in the workplace. We also provide transportation to help them get back and forth to work. Using trauma-informed practices, our goal is to build resilience as a means to economic growth.
